Why did Lot’s wife look back?

Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:24-26, NIV

Genesis 19 has the story of the destruction of Sodom, and a key feature of this story is an attempted gang rape. For some reason, some people take this attempted gang rape and turn it into a story about how God hates (male) homosexuality. Now, that is clearly nonsense, and I’ve written about that elsewhere. But it is still an ‘interpretation’ of the story that crops up from time to time.

What I don’t understand is if Sodom was a hotbed of male homosexuality, why did Lot’s wife look back?
